the Llangollen Canal

Walk
the beautiful Llangollen canal from Nantwich through the market towns of
Whitchurch and Ellesmere. The canal crosses Chirk and Pontcysyllte Aqueducts and then follows the
Dee valley through Llangollen, ending just outside this pretty town. On the
1st night stay near Nantwich and explore this Tudor market town.
Accommodation is in quiet B & B’s and
farms close to the canal. One night is spent in Ellesmere and on this day
and the last day through Llangollen the walking distance is shorter (8
miles) allowing time to explore. Total distance 53 miles

ITINERARY
First Day - Arrive
at accommodation on the outskirts of Nantwich from lunchtime/early
afternoon. Walk into Nantwich along the canal. Explore the lovely tudor
market town. Accommodation farmhouse close to the canal. 3 - 4 miles
Day
2 - We meet you to
collect your luggage and run through the arrangements. Walk past the busy
Hurleston junction and then throug quiet countryside to the pretty village
of Wrenbury. From here onto Marbury where you leave the canal.
Accommodation at Hampton House farm.

Day
3 - From Marbury the canal continues to the edge of Whitchurch, past
Grindley Brook locks. Stop at the Lock Gate Ccafe. From here on to
Whixhall, passing the Whixhall Meres and Mosses site of special scientific
interest - can detour to explore. 12 miles
Day 4 - A
short walk today passing Colemere Country Park, with its pretty lake and
then on to the small market town of Ellesmere. Time to explore Ellesmere,
walk or boat around the lake and visit the heron watch. 8.5 miles.
Day 5 - First
part of the day the canal passes through quiet countryside and then on to
Chirk and past Chirk Castle. If making good time it is worth a visit. From
here a short walk to Plas OPffa Farm for the night. 13 miles
Day 6 - Walk
over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, through the busy canal basin at Trevor and
the up the Dee valley to Llangollen. Explore this pretty market town and
visit the canal wharf, Plas Newydd - the home of the ladies of Llangollen.
Plenty of shops to browse. Continue on to the Horsehoe Falls - the start
of the canal, where we meet you and take you to the station or back to
your car in Nantwich
Day 7 - Option
to spend an extra night in Llangollen and return the next day. This
holiday can also be combined with the Offas Dyke - Clwydian
Hills Break..
