Description

This walking holiday follows the way marked Sandstone Trail, along the ridge from Beacon Hill at Frodsham, through Delamere Forest, past Beeston Castle and over the Peckforton Hills to Grindley Brook near Whitchurch on the Shropshire border. The ridge divides the low plains of the River Dee to the west and the River Weaver to the East and has great views over the Cheshire Plain to the Welsh Hills. The ridge is characterised by rocky sandstone outcrops and wooded areas, finally giving way to rolling farmland towards Whitchurch. Total walking distance is 30 - 35 miles depending on overnight stops. The walk is relatively gentle with some more moderate hilly sections.

Byways Breaks offer a number of options on this walking holiday -

  • Moderate option is a 3 night, 3 day break of 11 - 12 miles a day
  • The strenuous break is 2 nights, 2 days walking of 15 - 17.5 miles a day.

What Others Say...

"My friend and I decided, at short notice, to walk Offa's Dyke Path. I contacted four organisations to see if they could help with arrangements: two claimed that they had insufficient notice to arrange accommodation. Carolyn, from Byways Breaks, responded to say she could help and gave us a competitive indicative budget. Within the space of a week she had made 'last minute' bookings of 11 night's accommodation and provided us with a detailed itinerary and luggage tags to enable our main packs to be transferred daily. Each of the B&Bs, pubs and farmhouses in which we stayed was superb and either provided an evening meal or recommended good places to eat. They also offered packed lunches, each of which was excellent. The luggage transfer worked without a hitch and when we finally picked up our main packs in Prestatyn we were very pleased that we had entrusted the organisation of our walk to Carolyn. I have made my own arrangements on previous long distance walks but would have no hesitation in using Byways Breaks again as it allowed us better to enjoy the tremendous countryside knowing that we had a decent meal and a comfortable bed at the end of each day and did not have to further damage our ageing knees by carrying a heavy pack for 180 miles!
