Peckforton and Bunbury 

2 or 3 nights - GENTLE/MODERATE

Stay in or near the village of Tarporley, close to Beeston Castle and the Peckforton Hills. Tarporley has a pretty high street with good shops for browsing and a choice of pubs and tea shops.

The surrounding countryside is great for walking with quiet towpaths, winding lanes, footpaths and many pretty villages. Walks are a gentle 4 - 6 miles or moderate 8 - 10 miles. Walk to Bunbury village with its restored water mill, Delamere Forest, Beeston Castle and around the Peckforton Hills. Can mix with cycling - see Tarporley cycling breaks for ride options.

Day 2 and /or 3 - Circular walk choices

Last Day - Check out of your room. Circular walk for that day and leave in the afternoon.

Some circular walks from Tarporley

  • Beeston Castle, around the Peckforton Hills to Higher Burwardsley for a stop at the Candleworkshops and Pheasant Inn. Distance 5 miles or 8.5 miles. Castle is worth a visit, great views across 8 counties!

  • Explore Delamere Forest following sections of Sandstone Trail, lunch at the visitor centre or nearby cafe. Easy paths. Distance - 6 miles, or 9 miles

  • Walk to the pretty village of Bunbury to busy staircase locks, past restored water mill, lunch at local pub (recommended for food). Canal towpath and quiet footpaths. Distance 6 miles

  • Walk from Boot Inn at Kelsall, through Primrose Hill Woods and along section of the Sandstone Trail. Good views. Distance - 5 miles.

Border Walks - One Centre Break

2 or 3 nights - GENTLE/MODERATE

Gentle walks along the canals rivers, meres and mosses of North Shropshire. Stay in the quiet hamlet of Hanmer or the market town of Ellesmere. A selection of gentle walks of 4 - 6 miles and moderate walks of 8 - 10 miles are provided. These are either from where you stay or a short distance away. Walk to Colemere Country Park along the canal from the pretty market town of Ellesmere, to the Boat Inn in a lovely spot on a bend on the River Dee, or around Marbury Mere. Langollen is not far, offering slightly more strenuous walks on the Welsh hills. This break can also be combined with one or two days cycling

Some circular walks from Hanmer or Ellesmere

  • Walk along the canal from Ellesmere, to Colemere Country Park and lake. The walk is mainly flat along easy paths. Distance 4 or 5.5 miles

  • Walk starts at a lovely pub and goes through hamlet of Erbistock and along River Dee. Visit local garden with tea shop. Distance 5.5 miles

  • Lovely walk from Llangollen, with steep (but short) ascent to Castle Dinas Bran ruins, great views over Llangollen and the hills. Distance - 7.5 miles.

  • Quiet walk round Hanmer Mere starting at Hanmer Arms. Distance 4 miles.

  • Explore Whixhall Moss Nature Reserve, site of special scientific interest. Distance - various

 

Kington Walks 

2 or 3 nights - MODERATE

Stay in the borders market town of Kington in Herefordshire, a popular walking centre. A selection of moderate walks, of 8 - 10 miles are provided, all from where you are staying. Kington is a pretty town surrounded by hills and lovely countryside. Nearby places to visit include Knighton, Presteigne, Ludlow and Hay on Wye. Circular walks are provided following sections of Offas Dyke path and the Mortimer Trail.

Circular walks from Kington

  • Follow Offas Dyke onto Bradnor Hill, National Trust owned and over the highest golf course in England. Distance 4 miles

  • Walk to the hamlet of Titley for lunch at the well recommended Stag Inn. The walk follows sections of the Herefordshire Trail and Mortimer Trail . Distance - 9 miles

  • Walk along Offas Dyke over Hergest Ridge with splendid views to the village of Gladestry. Lunch at the Royal Oak and then back to Kington. Distance 10.5 miles
