Description

The Sandstone Trail walking holiday follows this way marked trail, along the low sandstone ridge from Beacon Hill at Frodsham, through Delamere Forest. From here it goes past Beeston Castle and over the Peckforton Hills to Grindley Brook near Whitchurch on the Shropshire border. The ridge divides the low plains of the River Dee to the west and the River Weaver to the East and has great views over the Cheshire Plain to the Welsh Hills.

The ridge is characterised by rocky sandstone outcrops and wooded areas, finally giving way to rolling farmland towards Whitchurch. Total walking distance is 30 – 35 miles depending on overnight stops. The walk is relatively gentle with some more moderate hilly sections and makes an ideal short walking holiday.

In 2017 Julia Bradbury listed the Sandstone Trail as one of Britains top 100 walks – See Julia Bradbury walks the Sandstone Trail. Clare Balding has just followed a section of the Sandstone Trail on Ramblings on Radio 4 – Sandstone Trail on Ramblings.  She walked the area around Bickerton Hill to Burwardsley.

Byways Breaks offer a number of options on this walking holiday –

  • Moderate option is a 3 night, 3 day break of 11 – 12 miles a day
  • The strenuous break is 2 nights, 2 days walking of 15 – 17.5 miles a day.
  • We can also tailor this holiday – please contact us.
