This cycling holiday starts near the lovely Roman city of Chester, then meanders through rolling farmland past pretty villages, canals, castles and Ice Cream Farm. The route in and out of Chester is along the canal, so no traffic to negotiate!

There are plenty of places to visit on this cycling holiday, including a Cheshire Cheese and Ice Cream Farm, Beeston Castle, a working Water Mill, Shire Horse centre, antique shops and pretty villages like Tarporley and Bunbury. There are plenty of good pubs and cafes for lunch stops, including one of our favorites The Dysart Arms at Bunbury, with a lovely garden overlooking the church. Adding an extra night to this cycling holiday near Chester takes you to Wrenbury on the Shropshire Union Canal and Cholmondeley Castle Gardens.

The Canals, Castles and Chester cycling holiday is ideal for a long weekend. The gentle option is good those wanting easy cycling with plenty of time to explore. The moderate holiday offers slightly longer distances exploring Delamere Forest and this interesting part of Cheshire.

Itinerary for Canals, Castles and Chester

This holiday is flexible and itineraries and costs might vary slightly depending on accommodation choices.

2 nights – 3 days. Gentle cycling route

Day 1 – Arrive at accommodation from lunchtime. We meet you when you arrive to deliver bikes and adjust them to make sure they are comfortable. Circular cycle ride around countryside on the outskirts of Chester (about 10 – 13 miles) or a ride into Chester along the canal (no traffic!) (about 10 – 11 miles). Opportunity to look around the Roman City of Chester.

Day 2 – Cycle through Hockenhull Platts nature reserve to Tarvin. From here explore Delamere Forest with its traffic free trails and nice cafe and then head through Kelsall, past the Boot Inn and on to stay at Willington Hall a nice country house hotel. About 15 miles

Day 3 – Cycle through the lovely Georgian village of Tarporley and then head to Beeston Castle, worth a visit, with views across 8 counties on a clear day. From here it’s back to Chester through Tattenhall, past the Cheshire Cheese and Ice Cream Farm. We meet you back near Chester with your luggage and to collect the bikes. About 16 miles.

2 nights – 3 days. Moderate cycling route

From here there’s an option detour to the Shire Horse Centre, then past Little Budworth Country Park, to spend the night at a quiet country inn. About 26 miles

Day 3 – Cycle to Tarporley, then to Beeston Castle, worth a visit, with views across 8 counties on a clear day. From here it’s back to Chester through Tattenhall and past the Cheshire Cheese and Ice Cream Farm. We meet you near Chester with your luggage and to collect the bikes. 19 miles.

Go through Bunbury village (small detour here takes you to working water mill and staircase locks on the canal. There is also the excellent Dysart Arms!. From here on to Cholmondeley Castle Gardens (only open Wed, Thurs, Sun and bank holidays). Stay at the Cholmondeley Arms. About 16 miles.

Day 4 – Cycle back to Chester through Burwardsley with option to detour to visit Candle Workshops or have coffee at Pheasant Inn. From here it’s downhill all the way to Tattenhall, past the Cheshire Cheese and Ice Cream Farm and on to Chester. The last part of the route follows the canal. We meet you back in Chester with your luggage and to collect the bikes. 16 – 17 miles.

3 nights – 4 days. Moderate cycling route
