Chester Prettiest City

9th December 2013

Chester has just been voted one of the prettiest cities in Europe by readers of US Today, ahead of Venice, Prague and Paris.

Chester was founded as a Roman fort in 79AD. It is one of the best preserved walled cities in the UK with almost 2 miles of walls, some sections of it dating back more than 2,000 years. It has the largest Roman amphitheatre in the country, a lovely cathedral and pretty riverfront.

One of Chesters key attractions is that while it has so much to offer the visitor, its still small enough to walk around easily. The city has many grade 1 listed medieval and Victorian buildings. The famous Rows are unique covered two tier shopping walkways dating back to the 13th century and home to many interesting and independent shops. There are plenty of award winning cafe, restaurants and pubs.

Several of Byways Breaks cycling holidays start either in or close to Chester allowing a visit to this lovely city. One of our popular hotels is right on the city walls with a lovely view over the river.
